You've found an independent jewelry brand you think she would love. One of these pieces of jewelry would make a great gift for her- but which one? You want to make sure she would actually like it and wear it.
After working many years in retail (prior to running my own business), I got used to asking some clarifying questions to help people choose the perfect gift.
Below are the 4 steps to picking the right piece of jewelry for a loved one:
Step 1: Pick the Jewelry Type
The first rule of thumb is to avoid purchasing rings/bracelets unless you know their ring/wrist size! The caveat to this is if the bracelet/ring is adjustable and you know the range their size is in.
If you don’t know their ring or wrist sizes, stick to earrings or necklaces as an easier gift option! Which do they wear more of? You could consider gifting them something you know they always wear (earrings for example) or gift them something you know they like and could use more of (necklaces for example)!
Step 2: Choose the Metal Tones
Next, consider their preferred metal tones. Do they tend to wear silver tones or gold tones or do they mix? Stick with what you know they prefer!
Step 3: Consider the Scale of the Piece: Minimalist or Statement
The next step is to think about the scale. Do they like small minimalist pieces or statement pieces? Do they wear both? If they wear both, you could either consider getting them something they wear more often so they will wear it more frequently. OR
you could get them a more statement special piece as a keepsake. Often times people wait for jewelry to be gifted to themselves and so splurging on something they would not typically spoil themselves with is a special gesture!
Step 4: How to Choose the Right Stones
If considering stone options, you could approach it from what their favorite colors to wear are or what their birthstones
are! Both are thoughtful choices in picking out a meaningful gift.
*Pro-tip, if you haven’t noticed these subtleties before, look through photos of them! The hints are all already there!*
